Duke of Edinburgh awards

Venture Out Expeditions

We are based in South Manchester and work with schools and youth groups all over the North West and further. As an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme we can run full or part programmes for the Expedition Award Section. We have run Bronze, Silver & Gold walking and canoeing expeditions for between 8-97 young people at a time. We train groups in schools and run their expeditions in the Peak District / Wales / Cheshire / Lancashire / Yorkshire and further afield on request.

Safety & Quality

We hold an Adventurous Activity Licence from the Health & Safety Executive and an Approved Activity Provider Licence from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. They audit us yearly to ensure our staffing, financial status, equipment and operating procedures meet national standards. We use well-qualified staff who have good experience of training and assessing.

Our services

We can deliver the complete programme for the expedition section, however, many organisations do some of the work and ask us to provide either just the expeditions or extra staff or advice.

We can:

  • Work closely with your DofE Centre Manager to organise entire programmes of training, practice and qualifying expeditions.
  • Organise the expeditions for groups that you have trained, this includes booking campsites, checking routes and notifying the DofE of the expedition.
  • Providing a team of supervisors to supervise expeditions where you have trained the groups and planned the expedition.
  • Provide supervisors or assessors to work alongside your staff and under the direction of a suitably qualified member of your staff.
  • Provide technical advice on your training programme and operating procedures for expeditions.
  • Provide Staff training to allow them to run their own in-centre training, expedition training and expedition assessment.
  • Parent evenings and parent evening support

Modes of transport

Walking (for groups 12-98)
canoeing / cycling. (groups of 6-24) – must enquire for a tailored quote.

Our Expedition Packages Explained

The Expedition section requires young people to work in a team to plan a multi-day camping journey. They have to prepare for it and carry it out with as little adult support as possible for their level of award. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award comprises of four elements.

  • Pre-expedition Training
  • Practice Expedition
  • Qualifying Expedition
  • Presentation

Pre-expedition training. Duration: 1 day or multiple shorter sessions

Classroom based training covering all sections of the Expedition Training Framework prescribed by the DofE. For Bronze and Silver programmes we will plan their expedition route. Afterwards we provide you with copies of their, route tracings, route cards, and meal plans. If you are based in the North West we can train your teams in short blocks or one a weekend at your venue, preferably throughout the winter months. Other venues are possible at extra cost. For groups based elsewhere in the country we can run an intensive weekend of training either away in the countryside or at your premises, wherever you are.

Practice Expedition
Duration: Bronze - 2 Days/1 Night, Silver – 2 Nights/2 Days, Gold – 3 Days/2 Nights

During this expedition teams work with a dedicated trainer to cover additional practical training and learn how to navigate, camp, keep themselves safe and well-nourished in an expedition setting. The expedition culminates in teams navigating un-accompanied, allowing participants to demonstrate to themselves and us their competency before they go on the final expedition. Each leader will de-brief their team and record their progress at the end of the expedition.

Qualifying Expedition
Duration: Bronze - 2 Days/1 Night, Silver – 3 Days/2 Nights, Gold – 5 Days/4 Nights*
*Including the mandatory acclimatisation evening before the expedition.

An un-accompanied expedition supervised by our fully qualified staff and assessed by accredited assessors. Participants follow the route they have planned whilst our leaders supervise them remotely, meeting them along the way to monitor their progress and safety. At the end of the expedition the team participates in a de-brief and their assessors will record complete an Assessor Report which we give you an electronic copy to upload.

Route Planning Support (Gold Qualifying Expedition)
This is included as standard in all Gold packages. It includes 1 day’s classroom based training to support the participant’s in planning their Qualifying Expedition. The training is delivered on-site at your location. It can be run at other locations or immediately after the practice expedition in a residential setting at additional cost. This must be at least 6 weeks before the qualifier expedition.
